How to select the papers for one Art Journal collage page

Collage Art Journaling Page

Today, we're addressing a common challenge faced by many of you - the accumulation of an abundance of papers we created from exploring different techniques and playing with mixed media. The result often leaves us with heaps of papers waiting for a purpose.

I'll share some invaluable tips on managing these papers.

Our focus?

Creating beautiful collage-like backgrounds for your journal pages. Let's dive in!

1. Embrace the Paper Playground: Start by selecting one paper that resonates with you. In the case of this video, I selected a piece that has loose watercolor flowers I created in a play session live on YouTube. It’s available here on our YouTube channel. Choosing a piece you love sets the tone for the creative journey.

2. Curate Your Palette: Consider the color scheme of your chosen paper. Navigate through your stash and select papers that complement it. Aim for a mix of papers with different dynamics - marks, colors, and textures. Don't forget to spice things up with elements like fabric or custom masking tapes for added interest.

3. Focus to Avoid Overwhelm: To prevent overwhelm, focus on a specific set of papers. Integrate neutral options like vintage paper or old book pages to enhance your collage. This curated selection will be the foundation for your artistic exploration.

4. Essential Art Supplies: Gather your artistic arsenal - paints, pastels, charcoal, pencils, and glue. Having these essentials ready keeps you focused on the creative process. Feel free to include additional items, but simplicity is key to avoiding overwhelm.

5. Shut Out Distractions: Before you begin, close your notebook or journal to avoid undue influence. This allows for a pure, uninhibited creative process. Engage in layering and gluing your selected papers onto the pages, experimenting with combinations, contrast, and depth.

6. Doodle, Add Marks, Enjoy the Journey: As you bring your collage to life, embrace the freedom to doodle and add marks. This process is a creative playground, an exploration of texture, color combinations, and composition. It's not about a specific purpose but the joy of self-expression.
